Ingredients

  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. shortening (maybe 3/4c.)
  • 1 c. sorghum molasses
  • 1/4 c. buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • about 5 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. soda in 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger

Method

  1. Cream sugar, shortening and molasses.

  2. Add egg and buttermilk. Mix well.

  3. Stir in dry ingredients together with vinegar and soda mixture.

  4. Divide dough into 6 balls.

  5. Press each ball into well-greased 8-inch cake pan.

  6. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until slightly browned.

  7. Remove from pans while warm and set aside to cool.
