Orange Slice Cake

A home-kitchen version of orange slice cake, written step by step so it's easy to follow that's worth the oven time.

Ingredients
- 1 c. butter Crisco
- 2 c. sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 4 c. plain flour
- 2 Tbsp. orange rind
- 2 c. chopped pecans
- 1 1/2 lb. orange slice candy, chopped
- 1 lb. pitted dates, chopped
- 1 can Angel Flake coconut
- 1 carton cherries (candied)
- 1 pt. fig preserves, drained
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Method
Cut candy, nuts and fruits in small pieces.
Toss in 1 cup flour.
Set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time.
Add rest of flour alternately with milk; mix well.
Add soda, baking powder and salt.
Mix all other fruits. Put into well greased tube pan.
Bake at 275° for about 2 1/2 hours.
While still hot make glaze using 2 cups orange juice, 2 cups sugar and 1 tablespoon grated orange rind.
Simmer at least 1 hour, then pour over cake.
