Pepper Steak

A home-kitchen version of pepper steak, written step by step so it's easy to follow built around good beef and pantry staples.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb. round steak, cut 1/2-inch thick
- 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. pepper
- 1/4 c. cooking oil
- 1 (8 oz.) can tomatoes
- 1 3/4 c. water
- 1/2 c. chopped onion
- 1 small clove garlic, minced
- 1 Tbsp. beef flavor gravy base
- 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 2 large bell peppers (large dice)
- hot cooked rice
Method
Cut steak in strips.
Combine flour, salt and pepper.
Coat meat strips.
In large skillet, saute meat in hot oil until brown on all sides.
Drain tomatoes; reserve liquid.
Add tomato liquid and water to meat.
Add onion, garlic and gravy base.
Cover and simmer for 1 1/4 hours, until meat is tender.
Uncover.
Add Worcestershire sauce.
Add bell peppers.
Cover and simmer 5 minutes.
Add drained tomatoes.
Cook 5 minutes more.
If thicker sauce is desired, thicken with water and flour mixture.
Serve over hot rice.
