Ingredients

  • 1/3 c. fine dry bread crumbs
  • 2 lb. hamburger
  • 1 Tbsp. minced instant onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. seasoned salt
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine
  • 1/4 c. cider vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 Tbsp. flour

Method

  1. Add crumbs to 1 cup water and let stand a few minutes.

  2. Add meat and next 4 ingredients and mix well.

  3. Shape into two loaves and brown on both sides in margarine in a skillet.

  4. Combine 1 cup water and remaining ingredients, except flour, and add to loaves in the skillet.

  5. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer, basting several times and turning once, about 1 hour.

  6. Remove the loaves, skim fat from liquid and thicken with flour mixed with a little cold water. Simmer a few minutes, add a little more water, if necessary, strain and serve over sliced meat.

  7. Serve with potato pancakes.
